In the course of living as an imperfect - yet highly blessed - human being, I have often wondered if God was “being nice” to me and my family because we had done something to earn His favor, or if He felt obligated to bless us because we had completed some part of a conditional promise. For example, the Lord says if we will bring our tithes into the storehouse, then He will open the windows of Heaven and pour out a blessing. (Malachi 3:10) Or, if we are faithful, we will be blessed. (Proverbs 28:20)
But regardless of whether God blesses out of obligation or because we are His children and He loves us (*hint* I pick this one!), I have found that it is still ok to WANT God’s favor and actively seek it. In fact I have started telling Him that I want to be His favorite!
God called Moses and Abraham “faithful,” and He said that David was a man after His own heart; so I figure why not go for it? Proverbs 22:1 says, “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” This tells me that it is a good thing to want the favor of the Lord!
