52 Days, Day 22, All Hands on Deck!

Nehemiah 3:12 (KJV) “And next unto him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters.”  Shallum, as a leader, sets the example by actively participating in the work.  Nehemiah made note of that, but he didn’t stop there.  The mention of Shallum’s daughters is very significant, as it highlights the involvement of not only women, but young women in the rebuilding process.  It seems to be almost impossible that women were pressed into the service, especially when it was one of so much danger (Nehemiah 4:13-21). These young women doing this type of work would have been very unusual in the cultural norms of the time.  Nehemiah noting this underscores the desperate need they were in. But it also shows the inclusivity when God’s work is being done, where all are called to participate. Paul would echo this truth in the church in Galatians 3:28 (KJV) “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.”  All hands on deck is a cry or signal on board a ship that would be given in an emergency. It lets ALL the crew members know their help is required, now.  Young man, young lady - now is the time for you to step up and fast, and pray, and play your part for the kingdom is calling - don’t discount yourself!
