Nehemiah 5:1-2 (NKJV) 1 “And there was a great outcry of the people and their wives against their Jewish brethren. 2 For there were those who said, “We, our sons, and our daughters [are] many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live.” The building of the wall is obviously the foremost thing on Nehemiah’s mind. But the reality of the hunger of the people is hanging heavy over the whole project. This moment has the potential to cause a great disturbance in their midst; and the moment of restoration that is happening. There’s an old saying about armies, “An army marches on its stomach.” This statement emphasizes that a well-fed army is essential for effective fighting and that inadequate supplies can cripple even the most powerful force. When the early church was riding a wave of tremendous growth, miracles, and breakthroughs; they hit this same reality in Acts 6:1-4. The physical needs of the people didn’t just stop because they were doing a great work for God. They handled the situation wisely and revival actually increased. Your physical needs are very real and God knows about them. We must constantly recall our Lord’s words, ‘seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things…Remember the sparrow. If you ask for bread…He won’t give you a stone; if you ask for a fish…He won’t give you a serpent.’ God isn’t ignoring your physical needs while you’re fasting and praying and giving Him a time of consecration. The beauty of living for God is that you keep things in there proper order, and when God blesses you with food, shelter, and clothing; you give Him all the glory.
