52 Days. Day 40, Doing God’s Work, While Facing Your Debts.

Nehemiah 5:3-4 (KJV) 3 “[Some] also there were that said, We have mortgaged our lands, vineyards, and houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth. 4 There were also that said, We have borrowed money for the king's tribute, [and that upon] our lands and vineyards.” The loss or mortgaging of these lands would have been devastating, threatening the livelihood and heritage of their families. Financial burdens can lead to significant stress and hardship. Nehemiah did not blame God for their bad financial decisions. Nehemiah took an audit of these accounts and deals harshly for the reasons behind much of this debt. He faced the facts and worked to reduce interest and give them a way forward. One of the Bible’s major topics is stewardship, how we handle our money. Jesus frequently used parables and teachings that revolved around money and possessions; demonstrating its significance in spiritual life. Look at someone’s spending habits and you can quickly tell what their priorities are. Do they pay tithes to support their local church? Do they give to missions? Do they see their earning power as a tool to bless the kingdom? Do they take care of their family and their obligations? Financial frustration will affect your faith. Scripture warns against the dangers of greed, the love of money, and debt; highlighting the potential for financial matters to lead us astray if not handled wisely. Be grateful for what you do have and ask God to give you wisdom to manage the resources you’ve been blessed with. If you find yourself in a trap, seek godly biblical counsel to begin the process of gaining financial freedom. What will you do today so that your future looks different than your present?
